Wonders Never Cease in the City of Angels

Posted in Book Reviews - Thomas Nelson at 3:31 pm by Cathy

Only a celebrity can get away with seeing angels without being labeled a religious nut or a psycho and make money in the process of telling their tale. That is what Kemp McAvoy counted on when he impersonates an angel giving a message to celebrity Olivia Hayden. McAvoy is always looking for the easy way out of all his problems, including financial issues, which is why when his girlfriends little girl ends up physically ill; he is not there for either the child or his girlfriend.

Tim Down’s Wonders Never Cease is a cute contrast of how different people are treated when they say they saw angels. The celebrity is regarded as being inspirational, yet the little girl who sees angels is looked upon as being mentally ill. Down writes from almost every character’s point of view, and he does it well. The book is an amusing and quick read that most people will be able to relate to.

2012, Is it the End?

Posted in Book Reviews - Thomas Nelson at 2:56 pm by Cathy

Doomsday and the end of the world have never been my favorite topics. This is because I do not have a firm opinion on the subject. I have been reluctant to form my own opinion because I have not taken the time to educate myself on the different ways that the end of the world might possibly occur. But today I have taken the first step to offer my view on the subject: I read someone else’s opinion of what might happen. Raymond C. Hundley’s Will the World End in 2012 is a collection of ten theories, from the Mayan calendar to Web bots, as to why the world will end in 2012. Hundley has explained, given the science (or the lack thereof), and counterarguments for each of the ten speculations. While Hundley’s book was informative, I still do not feel as though I will engage in any conversation about the end of the earth and when it will happen. Not because I am uninformed, but because I am apathetic about the subject.
